House Cleaning in Cambridge

Cambridge is three old towns that were stapled together in 1973, and the housing stock still tells you which one you're standing in. A stone Victorian in West Galt with plaster walls, radiators and a dirt-floor cellar does not clean like a 1960s bungalow off King Street in Preston, and neither of them cleans like a four-bedroom build in east Galt where the whole house is drywall, laminate and open sightlines. Most cleaning quotes ignore that entirely — they ask for a square-foot number and a bedroom count and give you a price. Then the first visit runs two hours long, or the trim never gets touched, and you're annoyed. What happens here instead: someone walks the house, counts the real work (the staircase spindles, the radiator fins, the window tracks, the basement stairs), tells you what a standard visit will and won't include, and quotes that. If the first clean needs to be a deep clean before a recurring schedule makes sense, you'll be told that up front rather than after.

Galt, Preston and Hespeler are still three different jobs. Nobody in Cambridge says "the northeast end" — they say Preston, or Hespeler, or Galt, and the cleaning is genuinely different in each. Galt's core and West Galt are stone-and-brick Victorian and Edwardian houses on Dickson Hill and the streets above the Grand: high ceilings, deep baseboards, picture rails, transom windows over the doors, and staircases that have to be done by hand. Preston runs to older working-class housing along and off King Street, a lot of it 1920s to 1950s, with newer infill dropped between them. Hespeler is the mill village core around Queen Street plus a large ring of newer subdivision. Same city, three different time budgets.

The century-home stock is the part most cleaners get wrong. Original hardwood with a worn shellac or wax finish will haze or lift if you steam it or flood it — it gets damp-mopped with a barely-wet flat mop and a neutral cleaner, nothing more. Plaster walls and original trim don't take abrasives. Cast-iron radiators collect a felt of dust between the fins that a vacuum wand alone won't lift, so they get brushed out and wiped, usually twice a year at minimum. Transom windows and the tops of tall casings are dust shelves nobody can see from the floor. Stone and rubble-wall basements shed grit constantly and never look finished, so the honest goal down there is controlled, not spotless. If a quote for a West Galt century home reads the same as one for a new build, it was written by someone who hasn't been in one.

New Cambridge is a different clean entirely. East Galt and the subdivisions off Franklin Boulevard, plus the newer growth north of Hespeler, are open-plan, drywall, quartz and laminate or engineered floors. The work moves fast but shifts to different things: glass and stainless fingerprints, shower glass with hard-water film, the two-storey entry window, and dust from ongoing construction if you're in a phase that's still being built out. Those houses generally suit a biweekly recurring visit better than anything, because the mess is volume, not age.

Shift work sets the schedule for a lot of this city. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada's plants are a huge part of Cambridge's working population, and rotating shifts mean a household where somebody is asleep at eleven in the morning on a Tuesday. Cambridge Memorial staff are in the same position. That's normal here and it's planned around: cleans booked to a rotation rather than a fixed weekly slot, quiet-room instructions so a bedroom gets skipped or done last, and lockbox or key access so nobody has to be woken up to open a door.

How the quote and the visit work. You call or send the form, describe the house, and someone comes and looks at it — inside, not from the driveway. You get a written scope: the rooms included, what's done every visit, what's on a rotation (fridge interior, oven, baseboards, radiators, window tracks), and what isn't included at all. Supplies and equipment come with the cleaner. If you want specific products used on an old floor or a stone counter, say so and they'll be used. Nothing gets added to the invoice that wasn't in the scope without a call first.
